Translations: A Love Letter
Not quite an air, more like a song without words, I wrote this piece in honor of David Green, 6/22/37-12/25/22. David was the first Facebook virtual friend who I met in person. I was on a business trip near Oakland and ended up at his home, the Greenery West, for lunch and delightful conversation. We stayed friends and, more recently, his wife Sharon and I became close friends through English Country Dance and music; she has written dances to go with several tunes I've written. Sharon describes David as "priest, translator, librarian. Grandfather, father, husband, friend.” He was always so sharp, funny, and caring, and always had good and interesting perspective. He will be missed by so many people.
David was a professional translator and that is what suggested the title, especially keeping in mind that I translate feelings into musi; Sharon translates music into motion and into feelings; and what triggered the tune was David himself, on Christmas morning, being translated into a new plane of being.
The recording on this page is very quick and dirty, with a bit of sound problems. Some time in the future we'll post a fleshed out version of the piece.
