The Pinckney Island Jig
I wrote this jig after time spent bird-watching and hiking in this special place on the coast of South Carolina, during nesting season where at least one of the rookeries was as full as a tenement building. Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge features more than 4,000 acres of wild beauty. The refuge includes Pinckney Island, Corn Island, Big Harry Island, Little Harry Island, Buzzard Island and numerous small hammocks. Nearly 67% of the refuge consists of salt marsh and tidal creeks.
The marshes and creeks support a great diversity of bird and plant life. Wildlife commonly observed on Pinckney Island include waterfowl, shorebirds, bald eagles, wood storks, wading birds, raptors, neo-tropical migrants, white-tailed deer and American alligators, with large concentrations of white ibis, herons, and egrets, of which I saw a ton.
